[Today, Katie visits the Item Shop. It's a short visit, and she's there to pick up anything remotely string-like that she can find. Why? Kittens like string, and she's all out of the stash she had.

...okay, she may have other less frivolous reasons. By this time she's mindful that certain grown ups may be looking for her, and thus her visit is hopefully timed for as few people around as possible. In, out, a polite nod to the person behind the counter with the pretty hair, and back to the woods she goes. Anyone that does see her in person might note she's thinner, but clean and tidy, unlike her last accidental appearance.

She goes far deep into the forest with her string, sitting on a large, flat rock in the sun next to Rei's charm, and unwinds every different strand around her in the grass, threading it all carefully and lovingly between her fingertips as if blessing each one. In a sense, she is. The glamour she's stolen recently is going to a good cause, even if the cause is not readily apparent.]

((ooc: you can run into her in the item shop by all means. She's all the way down at the southernmost edge of the forest for anyone who might be out that way-- or might be using other means to search for someone.

[Katie opens and closes her mouth, because nice to see you too won't work and she doesn't much feel like telling Buffy to get lost. Despite things, she misses both her and Jack.

She looks away.] I'm looking...like what?

...Looking like you're seriously in need of a cheeseburger. Extra pickles.

[ her concern is likely evident, but she wraps it up in humour. ]

[Katie smiles a little at that.] Do you think the scientists would bring us a MacDonald's if we asked them nicely?

...Maybe we can talk them into a single Happy Meal delivery. At least that'll come with a toy.

Maybe I'll ask them nicely the next time I see them.

[She shuffles, biting her lip briefly.] Is Jack okay?

[ is jack okay? buffy makes the iffy mistake of taking the time to actually worry over her answer. there were the ever-developing problems around joyce. the tension with spike. the lingering malaise of their last fight.

but... ]

I'm looking after him. I know he'd like to see you. You manage to trip his worry-wires. That's quite impressive, given what kinda man he is.

As long as worrying is all he's doing. [She doesn't. Doesn't. Want them involved. There's enough of Katie's love there for that.] Would you tell him I'm doing fine? I'm just having an adventure.

[ buffy opts not to be stern. her smile might not be happy but it has a sardonic warmth all the same.

so, gently: ] Do you think he'll believe me? I'm not the world's greatest liar. Or even the world's most mediocre one.

[ because even she can sense that nothing it perfectly fine. perhaps she doesn't realize the depth of the problem, but she knows something's off. ]

He'll believe you more than me. I have a terrible reputation for being a liar, and you'd be telling him the truth. It is an adventure.

[Just not a very safe one.]

I hear adventures are better when ventured with friends. Still...

[ lying to jack is difficult -- and not only because she doesn't like doing it. he's also the one who'd tried to teach her how to lie to people she cares about. all her tricks are his. ]

I'll do my best. On account of you being so important to him. So important to-- [ ...oh. hell. why not? ] So important to both of us.

[ something twists in her heart. she can't identify what. ]

[Katie stares down at her feet for a moment at that part, and then back to Buffy, less sure of herself.]

...Buffy?

I'll be okay.

[ gently -- hesitantly -- she reaches to touch a finger under katie's chin. ]

You'd better be.

[Katie tilts her head and smiles at that.]

...tell him I'll try to come home for dinner sometime never. Definitely later than soon.

Oh. Will you not be cooking?

I'll do all the cooking, but I only know how to do porridge. You might prefer something less tasty.

I see how it isn't. I'm certainly uninvited too, huh? [ buffy likes this version of lying. ] Maybe I could not stop by before dinner and provide no guidance and no help.

I'm a great cook. [ HAH. ]

[Katie bursts into giggles.] I'm sure without your guidance and help we can be great cooks together.

And absolutely no one will get food poisoning.

We'd better not invite a doctor along, then. He'd be rather disappointed he didn't get to do anything.

...Doctor McCoy is back. He's an option.

No relation, I'm presuming. Bones, though.

His name is Bones? [Though this does sound familiar. Katie only remembers Spock and Kirk from Star Trek. (On account of being seven when her mother watched it. Spock had cool ears.)]

I wish my name was Bones.

Oh, I don't know about that. I think he kinda hates being called it. He's grumpy like that.

He can have my name, then.
