[This is a very comfy forest, really.  The sunlight's warm, and Katie curls up near a fallen branch and near faceplants into a patch of new spring flowers and waits for Snow White to maybe come dancing through her dreams, or Bambi, or maybe a couple rebel fighters on an awesome speeder bike chase that she can help with.  Ewoks, even.  Look, it's her dream, okay.   She'll will one of these things into existence if she can manage it.

It takes her a long while to realise she's not actually sleeping, and that's ... a little concerning.  Because to her knowledge she doesn't make a habit of going to sleep anywhere other than her very cozy bed, and she doesn't remember why she'd be out here. 

Sleepwalking.  All the way out here?  Kidnapped.  Her parents aren't rich.  By aliens.  That's a little better, but still kind of worrying.  There's a distinct level of nervous settling over her now because she's entirely alone in the middle of a place she doesn't recognise, and she's just not adventurous enough to want to be out here without any obvious way of getting home.

It's not her fault, is it?   She can't get into trouble if it's not her fault.  (Is today a school day?)

It's when she staggers upright, still yawning, that her foot catches on the edge of something and she thumps back down to earth with a startled sound, turning to glare at whatever she'd touched (why are her feet bare?), and stares at the journal lying in the grass with her name stencilled on the front.  And Katie reaches for it, because if it has her name maybe it has an explanation, and... the sight of it touches off muzzy memories of its own.  Familiar, somehow.

So she opens it.

Oh.  She knows what this is.]

All kinds. More so back at home, really. The Slayer has more than just vampires to deal with.

Do you have to deal with them all by yourself?

[ there are a lot of very complicated answers to that question.

she chooses the one that is least pathetic and possibly more cool: ] The Slayer, as a rule, fights alone.

But I kinda like to break rules. The rules that should be broken, at least.

[Nodding.] It's a silly rule anyway. If you fight all by yourself, who would help if you got hurt?

Slayers are supposed to be very very good at not getting hurt.

Well, accidents happen. And what if you needed someone to... um. Send a message, or-- or if you really got hungry while running around Slaying, you could get them to bring you some food. And friends make things easier, anyway.

...Then yeah, it's a good thing I've got the Scoobies. Other Slayers weren't so lucky.

It's, uh, what we call our little cabal. I guess. Like the Scooby Gang?

Really? I do that in school all the time! Which one are you?

But you'd make a really good Daphne. You're pretty.

That's sweet, honey. Did Jack teach you that line?

But you are! You've got the hair and the-- oh, I suppose you sort of beat monsters up instead of needing rescue from them. But you're definitely not a Velma, and you can't be anyone else.

Sometimes? I feel like Scooby himself.

[flickerflash]

[She giggles.] Maybe if Scooby was a lot braver.

[herotypical]

Pfft. It's all about the shared love of sandwiches.

That makes sense. I would think that--

[Oh hey, there are loud rustings and footsteps incoming, and Buffy can probably hear Jack call out from her end.]

Oh. He's here.

Good. You're in very good hands, then.

You just get in touch if you wanna make good on that snack date. Or maybe another story.

I will! [All the snacks and all the stories.] Will you be coming around later?

Coming around there is a thing I tend to do. But this time? It'll be to visit you. Tough luck for Sparrow.

[The widest of smiles.] Okay! I'll see you later, then.

[And now she shall go and trail Jack home like a lost puppy.]

[ and later that day, buffy is climbing the stairs up to the little attic room -- knocking friendly-like on the wall before she steps inside. ]

[Katie is running her fingers over some of the chalk drawings on her wall with a look that's not quite disturbed, but... more uneasily curious than anything else. But at least now she has changed out of the horrid white dress and back into her more comfortable clothing.

She glances up when Buffy steps into the attic and smiles.]

Hello again. You came earlier than I expected.

[She's more than okay with this.]

I wanted to get the visit in before I left for patrol. It's a whole pre-sunset thing.

[ she smiles back and tosses a snickers bar in the girl's direction. she'd left another downstairs for her pirate. ] How are you feeling?
